การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ 1) เพื่อศึกษาระดับภาวะผู้นำเชิงพฤติกรรม และการปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง 2) เพื่อศึกษาอิทธิพลของภาวะผู้นำเชิงพฤติกรรมที่ส่งผลต่อการปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง 3) เพื่อศึกษาแนวทางในการพัฒนาการปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง กลุ่มตัวอย่างได้แก่ กำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน สารวัตรกำนัน แพทย์ประจำตำบล และผู้ช่วยผู้ใหญ่บ้าน ในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง จังหวัดอุดรธานี จำนวน 202 คน โดยใช้แบบสอบถามเป็นเครื่องมือในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล และสถิติที่ใช้ในการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลได้แก่ ค่าความถี่ ค่าร้อยละ ค่าเฉลี่ย ส่วนเบี่ยงเบนมาตรฐาน และการวิเคราะห์การถดถอยพหุคูณ  

ผลการวิจัยพบว่า 

1) ภาวะผู้นำเชิงพฤติกรรมของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้าน ในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง โดยภาพรวม อยู่ในระดับปานกลาง ( =3.17) เมื่อพิจารณารายด้าน พบว่า ด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยมากที่สุด คือ ภาวะผู้นำแบบประชาธิปไตย ( =4.01) มีภาวะผู้นำในระดับมาก รองลงมาคือ ภาวะผู้นำแบบเผด็จการ ( =3.25) มีภาวะผู้นำในระดับปานกลาง ส่วนด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยน้อยที่สุด คือ ภาวะผู้นำแบบเสรีนิยม ( =2.25) มีภาวะผู้นำในระดับน้อย 

2) การปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง โดยภาพรวมอยู่ในระดับมาก ( =4.41) เมื่อพิจารณารายด้าน พบว่า ด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยมากที่สุด คือ ด้านการนำข้อราชการไปประกาศแก่ราษฎร ( =4.65) มีการปฏิบัติงานในระดับมากที่สุด รองลงมาคือ ด้านกิจการสาธารณประโยชน์ ( =4.54) มีการปฏิบัติงานในระดับมากที่สุด ส่วนด้านที่มีค่าเฉลี่ยน้อยที่สุด คือ ด้านการจัดหมู่บ้านให้เป็นระเบียบเรียบร้อย ( =4.22) มีการปฏิบัติงานในระดับมาก

3) ภาวะผู้นำแบบประชาธิปไตย (ค่าเบต้า=.639) และด้านภาวะผู้นำแบบเสรีนิยม (ค่าเบต้า=.278) ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุงมีอิทธิพลต่อการปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง จังหวัดอุดรธานี อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .00 โดยมีค่าสัมประสิทธิ์พยากรณ์=.398 ส่วนภาวะผู้นำแบบเผด็จการ ไม่มีอิทธิพลต่อการปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง ซึ่งภาวะผู้นำแบบประชาธิปไตย และภาวะผู้นำแบบเสรีนิยม สามารถร่วมกันทำนายการปฏิบัติงานตามบทบาทหน้าที่ของกำนัน ผู้ใหญ่บ้านในเขตอำเภอบ้านดุง ได้ร้อยละ 38.90 ส่วนที่เหลือร้อยละ 61.10 เกิดจากอิทธิพลของตัวแปรอื่น ๆ

The purposes of this study included the following: 1) to investigate the level of behavioral leadership that affected the performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District, 2) to examine the influences of behavioral leadership on the performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District, and 3) to explore and gain guidelines on developing the performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District. The samples consisted of 202 village and sub-district headmen, assistants to sub-district headmen, sub-district health chiefs, and assistants to the village headmen of Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province. The instrument used was a questionnaire and statistics employed for data analysis comprised frequency, percentage, mean standard deviation, and Multiple Linear Regression Analysis.

The study revealed these results:

1. The behavioral leadership of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District, as a whole, was at the moderate level ( =3.17). Contemplating each aspect, it was found that democratic leadership was at the highest level ( =4.01), the autocratic leadership was at the second highest level ( =3.25), and laissez-fair leadership was at the least level ( =2.25). 

2. The performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District, as a whole, was at the high level ( =4.41). Contemplating each aspect, it was found that the notification and announcement of the official issues to the people were conducted at the highest level ( =4.65), the running of the public benefits was performed at the second highest level ( =4.54), and organizing the villages to be in order and tidiness was performed at the least level( =4.22).  

3. The democratic leadership (β=.639) and laissez-fair leadership (β=.278) of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District significantly affected the performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province at .00 level or with .389 coefficient value. Nevertheless, the autocratic leadership did not affect the performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen. At the same time both democratic leadership and laissez-fair leadership could be used to correctly predict the performances and the roles of the village and sub-district headmen of Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province 38.90%. The remaining 61.10% depended on other variables.
